EACC swoops on Makueni

EACC probes Wasanga’s
appointment as Makueni CS
.By Daniel kituku,
The Ethics and Anti corruption commission (EACC)   has swooped on Makueni County Government over the appointment of Dr Paul Wasanga as County Secretary.
Dr. Paul Wasanga
The EACC investigators are trying to unravel how Wasanga presided over the interview panel as Chairman and ended up slotting himself ahead of the pack as  the successful candidate who was presented for vetting by the Makueni County Assembly.
Speaking to The Anchor, the Regional  Coordinator of EACC Ms Susan Kanyeki confirmed that they are looking at the entire process of the events informing the appointment of Dr Wasanga.
Kanyeki said they are examining the whole process of employment from the application, interviews, vetting  to appointment of the substantive County Secretary.
Though the EACC did not want to reveal details of their probe as investigations were incomplete,
sources say Wasanga was head of the interview panel that his competitors sat before- along with members of the Makueni Public Service Board..
How he  eventually got the job remains a jigsaw puzzle. Investigators will pry into the bizarre possibility that the panel he chaired also purported to interview him at some point and awarded him top scores to whiz past other applicants.
The Anchor also verified that EACC had also interviewed other candidates for the position who were surprised to find Wasanga at the head of the panel even when they knew he had no official position  in the Makueni County Government.
The employment of Wasanga got murky when two residents from Makueni brought a sworn petition to the  Makueni assembly opposing his appointment as the county secretary.
They cited his tenure at the Kenya National Examination Council where the yet unresolved bribery saga nicknamed  Chicken Gate was hatched under his watch.
The assembly overlooked the petition that described Wasanga as a corrupt person who was unfit to hold a public office. The Assembly also deliberately skirted around the issue and adopted the report from the Assembly Vetting Committee,.approved the appointment of Wasanga and dismissed the two petitioners as mad people driven by malice.
The few members of the assembly who opposed the appointment of Wasanga were defeated by the Majority who feared crossing horns with Governor Kivutha Kibwana.
Wasanga presided over the KNEC at the height of wanton examination cheating. EACC is currently interrogating several Makueni county government officers over corruption allegations and abuse of office.
