Which Way for Machakos CECM Rita Ndunge?
By Queen Muandiki

The Machakos County Assembly convened yesterday to deliberate on the conduct of embattled Roads and Transport CECM, Rita Ndunge, in a session marked by heated exchanges and pointed accusations.

The discussions, spearheaded by MCA Alphonce Mutinda, popularly known as Ng’a Wee, centered on claims that the minister had become overly arrogant and dismissive of assembly members, particularly when approached for assistance.

“Madam Speaker, I recall a time when I reached out to the minister to discuss plans for enhancing the county’s image through the construction of Kincar Road. Her response was dismissive, stating that she didn’t need approval from an MCA to execute her duties,” lamented Muthwani MCA Dominic Maitha.

Multiple instances of alleged disrespect by Rita towards assembly members were cited during the debate. Minority Leader Judas Mbili Ndawa, echoing the sentiments of his colleagues, called for the governor to take decisive action. “We cannot allow someone like Rita, whom we now call Mashimo, to return to the executive. She must go!” Ndawa declared, amidst chants from other members supporting her removal.

Ndawa also urged for a thorough investigation into the Roads and Transport Department, suggesting that Rita might have been colluding with other officials in corrupt dealings.

The uproar comes in the wake of complaints lodged by the Machakos Matatu Owners Association and the circulation of a leaked phone conversation last week. The audio recording captured Rita confessing to accepting a bribe from Clinton Wambua, also known as Prestige. The confession has now drawn the attention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), where Rita is currently appearing to respond to the allegations.

The Anchor also established that Mr. Wambua has been summoned by the EACC to record a statement regarding the bribery allegations.

Speaker Anne Kiusya has since directed the assembly’s Transport Committee to investigate the complaints and submit a comprehensive report within seven days. The findings are expected to shed light on the extent of the challenges within the department and determine Rita’s fate in the executive.

The clock is ticking as the people of Machakos await answers, accountability, and justice.
