Calm is returning to Nduluku Location in Mbooni East Sub-county after a mysterious metallic object fell from the sky on Monday.
The object that landed in a bushy area near Thwake River was identified as a piece of rocket debris, weighing approximately one tonne and had a radius of 1.2 meters.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, audible over 50 kilometres away, as the object struck the ground. Upon impact, it was described as red-hot, radiating heat that could be felt from several meters away.
According to Major Alois Were of the Kenya Defence Forces and is attached to the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), the debris is believed to be a damaged satellite frame or part of a rocket that failed to disintegrate entirely during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. “Under normal circumstances, such objects are supposed to burn up completely or land safely in the ocean,” Major Were explained.
Kenya Space Agency officials visited the site today, accompanied by local authorities, including the Mbooni East Sub-county Police Commander and the area chief.
The debris, which landed approximately two kilometres from Mukuku Police Post, has been secured, and a unique identifier code retrieved from the object is expected to assist in tracing its origin.
Although the incident caused panic among residents, KSA has assured the public that the object poses no threat to safety. “This is an isolated incident, and there is no cause for alarm,” Major Were emphasized.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and KSA are conducting further investigations to determine the exact origin of the debris and whether any international regulations concerning space debris have been violated.
This rare occurrence has drawn significant attention to the growing risks of space debris, highlighting the need for enhanced global cooperation in managing objects in Earth’s orbit.
