Residents of Mukuku village in Mbooni, Makueni County, are grappling with despair and uncertainty following the fall from the sky of a mysterious object onto a local shamba.

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has confirmed the object to be part of a rocket, but their swift removal of the debris to an undisclosed location has left the community with more questions than answers.

Eyewitnesses recount how KSA officials, upon inspecting the object, ordered residents to vacate the area and transported the debris without addressing the community’s concerns.

The lack of communication has sparked outrage among locals, who are now demanding compensation for the trauma and damage caused by the unexpected event.

“We are living in fear. Women have miscarried, and our animals were so terrified they ran away. Some of us are still looking for our livestock,” said a distressed Mr Benson Ngemu, a Mbooni businessman.

Former Kiteta/ Kisau  MCA Mr. Dennis Masavu  raised concerns about potential radiation exposure from the debris and its long-term effects on the environment and their health.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ngemue called on the Government of Kenya and leaders from Makueni County to intervene. “Why was the object taken away without following proper procedures? The UN Treaty on Outer Space outlines clear guidelines on handling such incidents, and we deserve transparency and compensation,” he said.

A local elder who declined to be named  echoed the community’s frustration with what they perceive as negligence. Residents demand to be included in discussions about the incident and seek assurances that no larger debris from the rocket could follow.

Their serene environment has been deeply disturbed, and the psychological impact lingers. “We need answers. What chemicals were in that object? What guarantees do we have that we are safe now?” another resident questioned.

The Kenya Space Agency has yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter-apart from the incident report that they filed two days after the fall, further fueling the community’s anxiety.

As residents await clarity, their calls for justice and assurances grow louder, highlighting the need for better protocols in managing space debris incidents.

This incident underscores the growing concerns about space activity and its unintended consequences on vulnerable communities. It is a wake-up call for Kenya and the global community to address the risks associated with space exploration and debris management.
