Machakos County mulls over an E-Boda Project

Machakos County has initiated a conversation towards the launch of the E-Boda Project, an initiative aimed at replacing 40,000 fossil fuel-powered motorcycles with electric bikes by December 31, 2028.

The project was discussed during a high-level consultative meeting held on January 22, 2025, at the County Secretary’s office.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the County Secretary Dr Muya Ndambuki, the Chief Executive Officer of I Choose Life-Africa Mr Mike Mutungi, Ms.  Catherine Mutanu, Machakos County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Mr. Raymond Katunga, Deputy Country Leader for Spiro and Mr. Vince Sila, CEO of Datalock.

Together, they outlined a collaborative plan to revolutionize the boda-boda sector and position Machakos County as a leader in green energy and digital innovation.

Under the initiative, the county government will provide the policy and regulatory environment necessary for the adoption of electric bikes, while I Choose Life-Africa will focus on building the capacity of boda-boda SACCOs. This includes training riders in essential areas such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, safety, and overall well-being to ensure their long-term success.

Electric bike manufacturer Spiro will supply the bikes, each retailing at Kes. 152,000.

Meanwhile, Datalock will handle digital integration to enhance SACCO management and mitigate risks associated with financing and operations.

Though the idea sounds noble, the absence of boda boda representatives whose buy-in of the idea is pivotal to its success raises a red flag and may, in the end, become a good business plan

Significantly affordability of the bikes may require the intervention of financial institutions to offer riders affordable loan options.

The anticipated impact of the E-Boda Project is far-reaching. The transition is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent, contributing to a cleaner environment.

On paper, the initiative envisions creating 40,000 jobs, positively impacting the livelihoods of over 120,000 people. Riders will also benefit from enhanced digital skills, financial management capabilities, and improved safety standards.

“This project marks a transformative step for the boda-boda sector and the county as a whole,” said Mr. Mutungi. “It’s a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and shared commitment to a cleaner, greener future.”

If and when implemented, the E-Boda Project is poised to make Machakos County a model for sustainable development, offering a blueprint for other regions to follow.
