Makueni’s Executive Committee Member (ECM) for Trade, Industry, and Tourism, Dr. Sonia Nzilani, today, put to rest rumours surrounding her employment status.

She clarified that she is currently on a 45-day leave, dispelling claims that Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. had terminated her appointment.
In an exclusive interview with The Anchor, Dr. Nzilani explained that the leave was self-requested to utilize her many accumulated days off.
Dr. Nzilani has been the subject of public debate following controversial remarks she made during the burial of a female teenager who was fatally attacked by a crocodile in Athi River, Kithaayoni, Kitise/Kithuki Ward.
Sonia advised women undergoing menstruation to avoid the crocodile infested river, alleging that the reptiles get attracted to the scent of menstrual blood.
Though the claim may be scientifically unproven, it is a widely held view that what the minister said reflects a deep communal belief.
Her remarks have since triggered debate, with many women leaders calling for Sonia’s resignation or dismissal.
Ironically, Sonia spends much of her free time and resources helping the girl child especially in access to sanitary pads.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. reportedly directed Dr. Nzilani to take leave amidst backlash over her comments, which suggested that women should avoid rivers inhabited by crocodiles during menstruation. The statement sparked mixed reactions, igniting discussions across media platforms.
