Nine key MCAs allied to Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti were on Wednesday suspended from the County Assembly for a total of 36 sitting days in a dramatic escalation of internal House tensions.
The suspended group, led by Wiper Majority Leader Nicholas Kitavi Nzioka, had already been handed an eight-day suspension on Tuesday. But Speaker Ann Kiusya added another 28 sitting days during Wednesday’s session, citing what she termed “gross misconduct” and “abuse of parliamentary privilege.”
In her ruling, Speaker Kiusya said the members sparked violence and disorder when Nzioka obstructed her from delivering a Communication from the Chair.
“Owing to the breach of privilege and gross misconduct committed, the said members are hereby and forthwith suspended from the House for twenty-eight sitting days effective today,” she said, addressing a calmAssembly after Tuesday’s disorder.
The suspended MCAs are Nicholas Kitavi Nzioka, Stephen Nzue Mwanthi, Felix Mutunga Ngui, Raphael Lucky Nzau, Anna Nthenya Ndilo, Catherine Kyee, Catherine Muia, Annastacia Mutevu and Hellen Ndeti.
Police officers had cordoned off the Assembly precincts in anticipation of further disruption, barring the affected MCAs from accessing the building.
Felix Ngui, the Katangi Ward MCA, reportedly slipped through the barricade but was later ejected forcibly. Witnesses said he was frogmarched to the roadside, where he sustained a broken ankle and a torn suit.
Outside, a group of youths shouting in support of the suspended MCAs was dispersed with teargas.
The Assembly, which required 20 members as quorum had 24 MCAs transacting business.
In a clear signal of shifting political fortunes, Speaker Kiusya oversaw the removal of the suspended MCAs from key committees, stripping Governor Wavinya’s camp of crucial legislative influence.
The Assembly also adjusted its calendar in response to recent disruptions:
- To fast-track consideration and approval of the 2025/26 budget estimates by the June 30 deadline
- To recover sittings lost during the April 8 suspension of the Assembly
- To allow additional sittings as needed under Standing Order 27(3)
Wednesday’s developments mark a significant setback for Governor Wavinya Ndeti, whose grip on the Assembly appears increasingly tenuous.
Speaker Kiusya is enjoying support from UDA, Maendeleo Chap Chap, and a faction of Wiper MCAs opposed to the governor.
The affected MCAs are now effectively sidelined for the remainder of the year’s legislative calendar.
If the suspensions are fully enforced—the political landscape in the Machakos Assembly will shift markedly, leaving Wavinya’s administration exposed to deeper scrutiny and potential legislative gridlock.
