Wangondi, seven others told to show cause why their seats should not be declared vacant
Eight Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of Machakos, including Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka Wangondi, have been issued with show cause letters threatening the loss of their seats after allegedly missing eight sittings without explanation.
Speaker Anne Kiusya, in identical letters seen by The Anchor, invoked Article 194(1)(b) of the Constitution, which provides that an MCA shall vacate their seat if they fail to attend eight sittings of the Assembly without reasonable cause.
The lawmakers on the radar are: Nicholas Nzioka (Majority Leader), Judas Mbili Ndawa (Minority Leader), Annastacia Mutevu, Stephen Nzue, Felix Ngui, Julius Mutuku, Raphael Nzau and Erick Wambua. Each has been given seven days to respond with documentation showing why their seats should not be declared vacant.
In one of the letters, addressed to Nicholas Nzioka, the Speaker notes: “It has come to my attention that you have not attended Eight (8) sittings… Such absences are considered a violation of the constitutional requirement for active participation in the Assembly’s proceedings.”
The move comes on the day Nzioka, a known hatchet man of Governor Wavinya Ndeti publicly announced a fresh bid to impeach Speaker Anne Kiusya — a development now likely to inflame tensions between the Assembly leadership and the Speaker.
Political insiders say the simultaneous issuance of the letters marks an unprecedented disciplinary push in the County Assembly and could tilt the power balance sharply if any of the seats are declared vacant.
With both the Majority and Minority leaders implicated, the Assembly’s stability is in question.
The letters demand that each MCA respond within seven days, explaining their absences or risk losing their seat under the constitutional provision on persistent absenteeism.
The development is expected to trigger high-stakes manoeuvring and legal battles as the eight scramble to defend their positions amid an already charged political climate in Machakos.
