Tragedy has struck the family of Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama following the sudden death of her son, Moses, her only male child she had with former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama.
Moses, the third-born in a family of four children—all girls except him—developed breathing complications on Wednesday night, according to a family statement.
He was rushed to a local private hospital, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
His body has since been transferred to a local funeral home, where it is being preserved pending a possible postmortem examination.

Family sources say no foul play is suspected. Mr. Muthama posted on his Facebook account “It is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved son, Moses Muthama Nduya who passed on yesterday. Moses was a joyful and diligent young man, and it is painful that his life was taken so soon. Though our hearts are heavy, we entrust him to God’s loving care. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
As news of his death spread, leaders and residents across Machakos County began sending messages of condolence and solidarity to Senator Kavindu and her family, acknowledging the gravity of a loss that transcends political divisions.
Moses’ adult life unfolded under the shadow of a deeply public and protracted family dispute. Following the acrimonious divorce proceedings between his parents, he moved out of a home built for him by his father and took up residence with a friend in the Five Hills area of Machakos Town.
The family fallout, played out in both courtrooms and the public arena, placed immense strain on personal relationships and exposed private pain to relentless public scrutiny.
Professionally, Moses served as an Assistant Director of Finance at the Youth Department of the Machakos County Government.
He was among the first tranche of employees hired after Governor Wavinya Ndeti assumed office in 2022. However, his tenure attracted quiet controversy. Some colleagues allege that he had no clearly assigned responsibilities and that he remained away from the office for extended periods on medical grounds.
These claims were never tested through any publicly known disciplinary or administrative process.
Within political and activist circles, Moses’ situation was often drawn into broader debates about governance and oversight in Machakos County.
Critics of Senator Kavindu have previously suggested that her oversight role was complicated by her son’s employment in the county government. Amos Matata, a local activist, has argued that the senator faced an inherent personal conflict, saying she was “deeply conflicted as a mother.” Such assertions, however, remain matters of political opinion rather than established fact.
Moses himself became a controversial figure during the Machakos senatorial by-election that followed the death of Senator Boniface Kabaka.
Moses actively and openly campaiged against his mother, urging voters to reject her at the ballot ‘ because her candidature was designed to embarrass my father’- an episode that further exposed the depth of the family rift and blurred the line between private estrangement and public political contestation.
Friends and acquaintances say that the prolonged family dispute took a personal toll on Moses. It has been alleged that, amid the strain, he increasingly turned to alcohol and struggled with his health. These claims have not been formally documented and remain part of the informal accounts surrounding his later years.
As Machakos comes to terms with his death, the moment inevitably reopens difficult conversations about how personal tragedy, family conflict, and public office intersect. While public figures and their families are subject to scrutiny, the passing of Moses has also laid bare the human cost of disputes that extend far beyond politics.
As news of his passing spreads, the prevailing mood across the county is one of sympathy and restraint.
Beyond the allegations, the controversies, and the political arguments lies an undeniable reality: a mother and father are mourning their son, the sisters have lost the only brother they knew.A family is grieving. A life shaped by both privilege and turmoil has come to an abrupt end.
