Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has offered to mediate the growing political fallout sparked by a leaked phone conversation involving Makueni Senator Dan Kitonga Maanzo and remarks concerning Makueni First Lady Anita Mutula Kilonzo Jr..
In comments that he confirmed to The Anchor reflect his personal position on the matter, Prof. Kibwana said Senator Maanzo had for a long time given Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. a free pass, only to recently turn his criticism toward the Governor’s spouse, the Governor himself and even the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K), the political party under whose banner Maanzo was elected.

“Senator Maanzo Kitonga has largely given Junior a free pass, until he woke up recently only to direct strident aspersions on the Governor’s spouse, the husband himself and, inexplicably, SKM( Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka), the political oxygen that Maanzo relies on for bare survival,” Kibwana stated.
The former governor further argued that insults directed at Anita Mutula transcend personal politics and touch on broader issues of respect for women.
“Abusing Her Excellency Anita Mutula translates into abusing all the women of Makueni and indeed Kenya. I advise Senator to apologise to all concerned,” he said.
Kibwana also called on Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. to embrace reconciliation should an apology be forthcoming.
“And Governor should forgive his friend the Senator after an adequate apology. It is a Christian act to forgive,” he added.
Seeking to de-escalate the growing political tensions, Kibwana said he was ready to step in as a mediator if necessary.
“If need be, I offer to mediate in this matter which does not deserve to be escalated.”He concluded by urging Makueni leaders to exercise restraint and focus on the bigger political picture as the next General Election approaches.
“Let all Makueni leaders act judiciously. 2027 is around the corner.” Kibwana’s intervention comes amid intensifying debate over the leaked phone conversation, which has triggered sharp reactions from political leaders, women’s groups and supporters across Makueni County, with calls for accountability, reconciliation and respect in public discourse.
Maanzo was secretly recorded as he was speaking on phone to J.Musoma, a Makueni blogger, a recording that has gone viral, exposing Maanzo in a dishounorable attack on the person of Anita.
