A senior police officer has been arrested after he was linked to the alleged kidnapping of a couple who were reportedly abducted while delivering an online order in Baba Dogo.
The incident places the National Police Service( Emblem below) on the spot as it raises alarm bells on an organization whose responsibility is to detect, deter and fight criminal activities.
After their forceful capture they were forced to withdraw money from their bank accounts.
According to an incident report recorded at Githurai 44 Police Post under OB No. 55/30/07/2026 at 7.20 p.m., the two complainants, Kanuti Konrid and his wife Beatrice Naliaka Njoroge, told police they were attacked on Wednesday at about 3.00 p.m.
The report says the couple, who are engaged in an online business, had travelled to Baba Dogo to deliver an Apple Smart Watch to a customer identified only as Mbuvi, who had allegedly ordered the device online.
Police said that upon arriving at the agreed location, “a group of three men appeared and forced them into a waiting motor vehicle in which two other men were seated.”According to the report, Kanuti was handcuffed before the vehicle sped off towards Thika Road.
The report states that the victims were first driven to Shell Roasters along Thika Road, where they were allegedly forced to withdraw money.”The complainant managed to withdraw KSh17,000, which the suspects rejected, demanding KSh1,000,000 instead,” the report says.
Police further state that the suspects then drove the couple to Equity Bank in Githurai, where they allegedly ordered the complainants to withdraw the KSh1 million.
According to the report, the gang kept Beatrice hostage inside the vehicle while releasing her husband to enter the bank.
However, once inside, Kanuti alerted a bank teller about the ordeal.The teller immediately informed police officers guarding the bank.
The report states that officers raised an alarm and a Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPIV) team that was patrolling nearby responded immediately.”Upon seeing the officers approaching, three suspects fled on foot while the driver sped away with the female victim,” the report says.
Police officers fired warning shots into the air and managed to arrest one suspect identified as Stephen Okello Obewa.
The suspect was taken to Kasarani Police Station where, according to the police report, he allegedly admitted they were five people travelling in motor vehicle registration number KDV 792U, a white Toyota Axio, which police say belongs to him.
The report further states that Obewa identified four alleged accomplices who escaped from the scene as:Kelvin Mwangi, Oliver Baraza, Job Sidiga, and Cyrus Onyango.
The police report adds that the four “are alleged to be police officers.”Police also say the suspects robbed the couple of five mobile phones valued at KSh120,000 and an Apple Smart Watch valued at KSh2,500.
The female victim was later released along Kamiti Road, according to the report.
In a follow-up report recorded at Kasarani Police Station under OB No. 60/30/07/2026 at 9.04 p.m., police announced the arrest of No. 230440 IP Kelvin Mwangi, identified in the report as the Deputy OCS, Drive-In Police Station.
The follow-up report states: “Please be informed that No. 230440 IP Kelvin Mwangi Deputy OCS Drive In has been arrested in connection to the above incident of kidnapping with intent to commit a felony against two persons, a husband and wife, within Githurai 44.”
Police further state that the inspector “has been placed in cells to aid in the arrest of the other culprits who are at large as well as to assist in the investigations.”
The report indicates that the matter is being treated as Pending Under Investigation (P.U.I.), with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kasarani handling the case.
The incident places police conduct under renewed public scrutiny as investigators pursue the remaining suspects named in the report.
