Makueni County is set to improve women’s healthcare by introducing laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery, through a partnership with the Laparoscopy Mashinani Program and FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics).
Laparoscopic surgery is a modern, minimally invasive technique where a small camera and light, known as a laparoscope, are used to diagnose or treat various conditions. It is particularly effective for treating problems like fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancies, and can also be used for procedures like tubal ligation or hysterectomy.
This new partnership aims to bring these advanced medical services closer to rural areas, making specialized care accessible to people who need it the most.
On Monday, FIGO President Prof. Beatrice Kihara and a team of doctors visited Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo in Wote for an initial meeting focused on improving maternal health. Governor Kilonzo promised that Makueni County would fully embrace modern surgical technology to ensure better healthcare for residents.
Gynecological issues are a major health challenge worldwide, especially in regions with limited healthcare services. Laparoscopic surgery offers several benefits, including smaller cuts, less pain, minimal scarring, reduced blood loss, and lower risks of infection, making it a safer option for patients.
This move marks a significant step in ensuring women in Makueni and beyond have access to quality, life-saving medical care.
