Machakos County Assembly Speaker Anne Kiusya has lifted the indefinite suspension of house sittings.

In a communication to Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), Kiusya said the lifting of the suspension follows a resolution by the County Assembly Service Board, which met on May 22, 2025. The board resolved that both plenary and committee sessions be resumed with immediate effect.

Additionally, the suspension on MCAs’ travel and allowances was lifted, also with immediate effect.

“I hereby communicate the above resolutions to Hon. Members and direct that the various committees resume sittings on Monday, 26th May 2025,” Kiusya stated in the notice, which was signed on the same day as the board meeting.

The development comes on the same day Speaker Kiusya and members of the Assembly leadership were expected to appear before the Senate following a summons over the recent chaos and governance stalemate in the county legislature.

This resumption of sittings unfolds amid a cloud of political uncertainty.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti is widely believed to be pushing for the removal of Speaker Kiusya, deepening tensions within the county’s political leadership.

Two standing court injunctions continue to bar any attempts to impeach the Speaker, and contempt of court proceedings still loom over MCAs who led previous impeachment efforts, further complicating the standoff.

The Assembly sittings had been suspended indefinitely on April 8 after a fist fight amid internal wrangles, allegations of corruption, misconduct, and a toxic political environment.

The lifting of the suspension marks a significant step towards restoring legislative operations, but the path ahead remains fraught with legal and political challenges.
