Healthcare system failure under Governor Wavinya Ndeti is the result of broken systems, her main challenger Nzioka Waita charged today.
Waita accused the county administration of presiding over a collapse in service delivery that has left patients exposed and public hospitals unreliable.
Speaking in a podcast, Waita said Machakos’ health crisis is not accidental but structural, driven by weak accountability, compromised drug supply chains and poor hospital management.
He argued that quality healthcare begins with basics that the county has failed to secure — equipped facilities, reliable medicines and systems that serve patients rather than vested interests.
Waita pointed to persistent medicine shortages as evidence of systemic failure, saying drugs procured with public funds routinely fail to reach intended patients.
He accused the county of allowing diversion and private resale to thrive, warning that without sealing supply chains and enforcing oversight, public hospitals will remain hollow institutions.
“Every shilling meant for healthcare must serve patients,” he said.
He also faulted the county leadership for neglecting professional management of hospitals and health centres, saying facilities cannot function without clear accountability, strong leadership and enforceable standards focused on patient care.
Health workers, Waita added, have been undermined by the absence of a clear scheme of service, structured training and fair deployment, resulting in low morale and weakened service delivery.
He said motivated professionals are the backbone of any functional health system and cannot be sidelined without consequences.
When systems work, Waita said, healthcare becomes predictable, trusted and accessible — restoring confidence in public facilities and dignity to patients.
“Machakos does not need explanations or excuses, but a health system that works. It must work.Period.” he concluded.
