The County Government of Kitui County has condemned a disturbing wave of killings targeting women, describing the incidents as brutal, inhumane, and a direct violation of the right to life and human dignity.
In a strongly worded press statement, County Executive Committee Member for Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services, Phoebe Mutemi, expressed outrage over recent cases where women have been killed under unclear circumstances and their bodies later discovered by members of the public.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our daughters, sisters, and mothers in such senseless circumstances. This is not the Kitui we want,” Mutemi said, calling for urgent action by the National Police Service to fast-track investigations and bring those responsible to justice.
The county government said it stands in solidarity with the affected families, emphasizing that the safety of women and girls remains a non-negotiable priority.
Mutemi urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities by sharing any information that could aid ongoing investigations, noting that community involvement is critical in addressing gender-based violence.
In response to the killings, the county announced plans to establish rapid-response community forums in collaboration with the National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers, and civil society organizations. The forums are expected to focus on strengthening safe reporting channels, offering psychosocial support to victims and families, and enhancing preventive awareness at the grassroots level.
“No woman should walk in fear. As a county, we are committed to strengthening protection systems and ensuring justice is both done and seen to be done,” Mutemi added.
Members of the public have been encouraged to report cases of gender-based violence through the national toll-free helpline 1195 or at the nearest police station.
The statement comes amid growing concern over rising cases of violence against women across parts of the country, with calls mounting for stronger enforcement and community-driven prevention measures.
