A tragic day on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway left at least eight people dead and scores injured after two separate road accidents occurred within hours of each other.
The deadliest crash happened shortly after midnight in the Kapiti area between Kyumbi and Konza, where a Tahmeed Express bus travelling from Mombasa collided with two trailers.
In a statement released Tuesday, Tahmeed Express confirmed that its bus, registration KDL 079S, was involved in the fatal accident.
“It is with profound sorrow that we confirm one of our buses, KDL 079S, was involved in a fatal road traffic accident in the Kapiti area of Konza shortly after midnight today,” the company said.
Tahmeed said six people lost their lives in the crash, including its driver and the driver of one of the trucks involved.
“We deeply regret to confirm that six people lost their lives in the incident, including our driver and the driver of the truck involved,” the statement read.
The company said several passengers sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention.

Those with minor injuries were treated and discharged, while others remained under medical observation before continuing with their journey aboard a rescue bus dispatched by the company.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where more than 40 passengers were attended to for injuries ranging from minor to serious.
According to Tahmeed Express, preliminary information indicates that one truck attempting to overtake was struck from behind by a second truck, forcing it into the path of the oncoming bus.
The company said it would leave the determination of the exact cause of the crash to investigators.
Hours later, another tragedy struck at Nyumba Ndune near Sultan Hamud, where two people were killed in a separate road accident, bringing the day’s death toll on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway to eight.
The twin crashes once again highlighted the growing concern over road safety along one of Kenya’s busiest highways, particularly the Konza–Kyumbi stretch, which has witnessed several fatal accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles and long-distance passenger buses.
Police are investigating both accidents as families begin mourning their loved ones while the injured continue receiving treatment.
Authorities have appealed to motorists to exercise greater caution, especially at night, maintain safe following distances and avoid dangerous overtaking, as investigations into the two crashes continue.
