Two people have been arrested in Machakos Town for allegedly being in possession of elephant tusks weighing 12 kilogrammes and valued at KSh1.2 million.

The suspects were arrested by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers while allegedly transporting the tusks on a motorcycle.
Machakos Sub-County Wildlife Warden Ismael Kiprop( Pictured below, Left) said the arrest was part of intensified efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking in the county.

The tusks had reportedly been wrapped in foil paper.
Kiprop said 11 cases involving wildlife offences had been reported in Machakos over the past month, including the arrest of five other people found in possession of elephant tusks valued at KSh1.3 million.
He warned residents against engaging in the illegal wildlife trade and urged them to be cautious when buying meat, citing concerns over an increase in the illegal hunting of wild animals.
One of the two latest suspects is alleged to be an employee of the Machakos County Government’s Water Department.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday morning to face charges relating to the alleged possession and transportation of the elephant tusks.
