Makueni County today unveiled a landmark County Energy Policy that sets out a bold framework to transform the region’s energy landscape through clean, sustainable, and inclusive solutions.

The policy is expected to ensure universal access to clean energy by 2028.
The launch was officiated by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. alongside Dan Wilcox, Economic Counsellor and Head of Prosperity and Climate at the British High Commission in Nairobi.
Governor Kilonzo hailed the policy as a “landmark achievement” that demonstrates the enduring partnership between Makueni and the UK Government.

“Together, we are restoring forest landscapes, strengthening energy and health systems, and delivering real impact for our communities,” he said. “Makueni is proud to lead in climate resilience and inclusive growth, and through this collaboration, we are co-creating a future that is green, healthy, and full of opportunity for every resident.”
Wilcox described the launch as “more than a milestone,” terming it a decisive step toward clean energy access, climate resilience, and inclusive growth.

“From forest restoration to unlocking renewable energy investments, this is where ideas become real, shaping the future,” he said. “The Kenya–UK Strategic Partnership is building a future where communities thrive—equitably and sustainably.”
The County Energy Policy sets the foundation for legislation, planning, and programmes that will accelerate the transition from fossil fuels and unlock renewable energy investments.
It builds on the UK’s global USD 1.5 billion commitment to nature and climate interventions and past UK support, including the Makueni County Energy Plan launched in 2024.

The new framework also links to economic inclusion initiatives such as the Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) programme, with projects like the Kalamba fruit processing plant seen as key in boosting incomes and creating jobs.
