A 23-year-old man accused of murdering his wife and their two children has been detained for five more days to allow police to complete investigations.
Amos Nyingi Wambua was arraigned before the Machakos Senior Principal Magistrate Betty Koech (Pictured below) but did not take a plea after the prosecution applied for more time to conclude investigations.
Ms. Koech granted the application and ordered that the suspect remain in police custody for five days.
He will be presented before the court again on July 27, 2026.
Police allege that Wambua murdered his wife and their two children on June 14, 2026, before disposing of their bodies in a thicket at Kaseveni Village, Kithia Sub-Location, Kaewa Location in Kathiani Sub-County, Machakos County.
The suspect was arrested in Mashuru, Kajiado County, where he had reportedly gone into hiding and was working as a farm hand.
He will remain in custody at Kathiani Police Station pending the completion of investigations.
The killings came to light after residents spotted a dog carrying what they suspected was the limb of a child.
They followed the animal into a nearby thicket, where they were met by a strong foul smell.
As they searched the area, they discovered the decomposed bodies of Wambua’s wife and the couple’s two children.
Police also recovered a human skull believed to have been at the site for a much longer period, and investigations are continuing to establish its identity and whether it is connected to the case
Kathiani Sub-County Police Commander George Kashimiri confirmed the incident and dismissed claims that the bodies had been doused in acid, explaining that the advanced decomposition was caused by prolonged exposure to the prevailing heat.
He said the remote location where the bodies were found suggested that whoever dumped them was familiar with the area.
He also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious vehicles or activities that could assist ongoing investigations.
Residents have called for a comprehensive search of the thicket, expressing fears that there could be more bodies hidden in the area.
Police say investigations are ongoing and that all circumstances surrounding the killings are being examined, including reports that the murders may have stemmed from a family dispute.
