Police have arrested six suspects in connection with the murder of Machakos County Government employee Alphonse Matee.
His body was discovered under mysterious circumstances at Kyumbi in Mavoko Sub-County earlier this week and tagged as an unknown adult African male.
Among those detained are two colleagues based at the county finance office- one an accountant and the other a procurement officer in the same office.
Three others are said to be workers at a pub in Kyumbi while one is reported to have ferried a drink to Kyumbi that the deceased and his colleagues consumed that night.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday as investigations into the killing gather momentum.
Machakos County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Kassim Baricha confirmed the arrests, saying detectives had made significant progress in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of the county employee.
Matee, popularly known on social media as “Ali Karen,” disappeared on Tuesday before his body was recovered the following day in the Kyumbi area.
At the time of recovery, the deceased had been recorded as an unknown African male before colleagues and family members positively identified him.
His body reportedly bore visible injuries, raising suspicions of foul play.
Colleagues described him as a highly resourceful officer who frequently assisted staff members with financial and information management systems, earning him the reputation of a problem solver within county circles.
The arrests mark the first major breakthrough in a case that has sparked public concern and widespread speculation over the circumstances surrounding Matee’s death.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or the possible motive behind the killing, saying investigations are still ongoing.
The case is expected to attract keen public interest when the suspects appear in court.
