A locomotive driver and his assistant escaped unhurt this afternoon after a goods train carrying soda ash caught fire.
The train was hauling several wagons while travelling from the Mombasa direction to Magadi Soda Factory in Kajiado County.
The incident occurred at Masimba area along the old Railway line when the operators spotted fire on the engine cabin.
Iy forced the operators to stop the train on the line to deal with the emergency.
Officers from the Kibwezi Fire and Rescue Unit rushed to the scene but could do little to contain the raging inferno.
It is suspected that the blaze was caused by a mechanical fault on the old engine.
