245 medical facilities

KITUI’s 245 medical facilities are gearing up to establish new Health Management Committees (HMCs) to guarantee dynamic leadership ahead of the launch of the county’s Universal Health Care.
The move is in line with Governor Kaluki Ngilu’s second pillar of her manifesto on provision of health care for Kitui people and comes as the governor steps up efforts to deliver on efficiency in service delivery.
Health and Sanitation Minster Ms Rosaita Ngina said yesterday that training workshops are continuing across Kitui among health sector workers, stakeholders and local communities in preparation for establishing the HMCs to run hospital in the next three years.
Those picked for the job will have the option of serving one more term, depending on one’s performance.
Some of the facilities operate under teams whose tenure ended many years ago and others do not have committees since they commenced operations.
The process was triggered with the passing of the Kitui County Health Facilities Management Committees Act which details the process, criteria, and categories of the health facilities. Kitui County has 14 hospitals, 56 Health Centers and 175 dispensaries, bringing them to a total of 245.
Ms Ngina said the objective of the sensitization workshops ahead of the establishment of the committees is a deliberate move to have ownership and the best teams in place.
“We are planning to provide the best healthcare that our people have ever been given. This is the top priority for the Health and Sanitation ministry in line with Governor Ngilu’s manifesto”, Ms Ngina said.
She said the committees are expected to be in office by the end of April 2018.
In another development, Ms Ngina announced yesterday the commencement of training Kitui’s 2,100 Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) with entrepreneurial skills.
The training targets 500 of them who will then train the rest. CHVs earn a paltry salary but have a robust savings scheme of Sh 1,000 each month, attracting interest from UNICEF to train them on how to invest their savings.
