Yatta, Machakos County — A group of 200 dons drawn from 23 public universities across Kenya on Friday, September 5, 2025, declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s bid for the presidency in the 2027 general election.
The dons convened at Dr. Musyoka’s Yatta Farm home, where they engaged him in a candid dialogue on education, leadership, and Kenya’s future. At the close of deliberations, they unanimously endorsed his presidential aspirations.
Also present were 30 student leaders from universities across the country, marking the first time the academic community has formally rallied behind Musyoka in the countdown to 2027.
Speakers declared openly that as key players in the universities, Kenya’s university education system had been decimated and was on the verge of collapse under the watch of President William Ruto.
The endorsement was made in the presence of key national figures, among them former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i and former Attorney General JB Muturi, who joined the gathering as observers of the dialogue.
Musyoka, in his address, castigated President William Ruto’s administration for “sliding Kenyans further below the poverty line,” saying the country urgently needs a leadership shift anchored in equity, dignity, and national unity.
The event adds fresh momentum to the question of opposition unity. The opposition coalition has yet to settle on a joint candidate among four possible contenders: Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Dr. Matiangi, former Justice Minister Martha Karua, and former Defence Minister Eugene Wamalwa.
By securing the backing of the academic community, Musyoka’s campaign has signalled an intention to frame education, leadership integrity, and economic renewal as the central planks of his 2027 bid.
